Subject: Ambience for a city nearly in lockdown
Location: Central Vancouver
Distance Covered: None
Notes:
Somehow it already feels like a year since my last recordings, which (oddly enough) all seemed to be based around groups of people. I’m trying my best to stay active and continuing to record sounds, but I think everyone needs to be more forgiving with what gets accomplished this year from a work point of view. I think being alive, positive, and a functioning human at the end of the year is the new goal for 2020.
That being said, Alastair Sirkett posted an “Ambient Isolation” crowd source library on twitter, looking for folks to contribute to a sound library based around the new sparsity of various locations around the world.
So I thought I’d take a stab with what Vancouver has been sounding like as more and more people are deciding to stay indoors, isolate, and socially distance themselves from others.
For the first recording, I was up earlier than usual to try and get out for a run and avoid people (it kind of failed, I won’t be running again outdoors for a while). But it was nice to get the dawn chorus with a bit less traffic.
The evening was obviously much less sparse, traffic is noticeably quieter than usual. Some distant sirens and planes are still landing for now.
Stay safe folks.
